Bodrum a été fondée sur Halicarnasse, une des plus grandes cités de l'antiquité.  Pendant des siècles elle a été le phare de la civilisation ainsi que le berceau d'Hérodote (485 av.J.C-425 ap.J.C.), surnommé "Le père de l"Histoire", car il fut le premier à rédiger d'une façon compréhensive l'histoire du monde. Le théâtre antique est l'un des monuments les plus importants d'Halicarnasse qui soit encore debout.  Il s'adosse au flanc de la colline qui surplombe la ville, avec une vue imprenable sur le port et le château St-Pierre. Bodrum was established on the site of one of the most famous antique cities called Halicarnassus. Herodotus (c. 485-425 BC), the so-called "Father of History", who wrote the first comprehensive world history, was Bodrum's most famous son. The antique theater represents the most important archeological remains from Halicarnassus. It is situated on the south slope of the hill overhanging the city, with a breathtaking view over the harbour and St.Peter Castle.

C'est l'un des plus anciens théâtres de l'Asie Mineure, il daterait du temps du roi Mausole. It's one of the oldest theaters of Minor Asia, dating back to the time of King Mausolus. Les rangées de gradins ont été taillées dans la roche douce, certaines sont gravées de noms. Ce serait ceux de bienfaiteurs. The seats were carved from rock built on the slopes of the hill.  There are names written on some of the seats.  These names would belong to sponsors. L'autel de Dionysos Dionysos Altar Avant le début des fouilles en 1973, tout ce qui apparaissait  c'était quelques bancs qui sortaient du gazon de la colline comme on voit en haut à gauche. Before the start of the excavations in 1973, all that could be seen were some benches coming out of the grass like here on the top left of the picture. Le théâtre a un diamètre de 110 mètres et autrefois il pouvait accueillir environ 13,000 personnes. The theater is 110 meters in diameter and in the past had a capacity of about 13,000 people. Était-ce la fosse aux lions ? Was it the lions cage ? Voici l'intérieur Here is the inside Ce serait plus confortable avec un coussin... It would be more confortable with a cushion... On a passé un agréable avant-midi au théâtre. We spent a nice morning at the theater.
